Check out this New York Times story: "Diabetics in the Workplace Confront a Tangle of Laws".

Wow.

I must say, I find myself a bit frustrated after reading that article.

I didn't realize there was such a balancing act in terms of being "disabled enough" to qualify under ADA, but not "too disabled" to perform a given job well enough.

One part that really struck me was that the guy in the article that worked for UPS was allowed to do his job when not on insulin - leaving his diabetes to run out of control. But as soon as he made the decision to start on insulin, he was not able to get the credentials he needed for the job.

It really sucks that he was forced to make a decision like that. What does he do? Save his health and sacrifice his job? Or save his job and sacrifice his health. No easy choice there!

I know. The UPS guy's experience really bespeaks the ignorance of people in general--"oh, you're on insulin. Your diabetes must be bad."

GRRRR.

If it makes you feel any better, there's a more encouraging diabetes article in the 12/30/2006 New York Times in the Health Section. I'll try to find it and add the link.
